Hoooong Koooooong!!!

Spending 5 days in Hong Kong has been absolutely amazing!!! I really don't even know where to begin-- the city is just fantastic, especially when you've got a local (ha ha, Karli) who knows the great places to go! I'm leaving HK tonight completely exhausted. From a hike up into the jungle with crazy views of the city, to a ridiculous comedy club, to a seriously (SERIOUSLY) exclusive posh rooftop party, to a ferry ride, to a tram ride up to the peak... walking in kowloon at various markets, meeting Karlis' co-workers (all such great people!!)... it's just been an amazing trip. And the food, oh the food!!!
I'm staying in Bangkok tonight and heading back to Chicago tomorrow night. It hasn't hit me yet.
The things I've seen the last 2 months- some fascinating, some exciting, and some extremely difficult and sad, all have been amazing. I think about the things my eyes have seen and it leaves me so full of gratitude. I would never have imagined a decision to travel like this would have taught me so much about not only other people and cultural differences, but also about myself. WOW.
I should be able to post a few pictures tonight or tomorrow from Bangkok, otherwise I'll be posting photos on facebook in the near future. In the meantime, I'm off to enjoy my last few hours here.
with love,
Lauma :)

Hong Kong!!!!

hi everyone,
just a quick note to say i arrived in hong kong yesterday!! i had a great (and quick) flight, just 2.5 hours from BKK. daini & mara-- after take off a flight attendant came to me with a dish of food and said with an accent "you requested gelatin free meal, yes?" and i said "excuse me?" and again she said "gelatin free meal?"... i remembered back in january when i booked the flight there was an option for a gluten-free meal so i clicked for it. she put down an assortment of dishes all labeled "GF". 2 small fruit platters, broccoli, potatoes, salmon and even GF bread with butter. crazy!!
after getting my bag i took the express train from the airport to the hong kong station. nothing more exciting than stepping out to see a familiar face!! karlis was standing there and we both just started laughing! we went for a drink at an outdoor bar surrounded by ridiculously tall skyscrapers, right on the water where there are buildings all along the other side. music selection was choice! all in all a great first night in hong kong.
i'll write again later and try to post some pictures.
love,
lauma

My breakfast... Mango, dragonfruit, apple, papaya, banana....

Leaving Cambodia...

Sewsadday! I'm sitting here having a late fruit salad and coffee
breakfast with free wifi so just wanted to give you a few updates.
First of all, something not related to travel-- I've received an email
of acceptance for the masters program at Western Michigan University!
So it looks like I'm going back to school in the fall... I'm really
looking forward to it! I have 2 other schools to hear back from.
It's been starting to hit me that I'm going back to the US soon... I
definitely miss everyone but at the same time there's just something
about travel... And so I've added many more places to my hit list :)
I'm spending my last day in Sihanoukville at the beach. I'm running
into the same group of really hilarious Cambodian kids and I promised
I'd go back today to buy fruit from them. We share the same dry sense
of humor so there's a lot of laughing going on. Tonight I'm taking an
overnight bus to Bangkok, and Thursday I'm off to Hong Kong. I'll keep
you posted on my whereabouts!
Thanks again for all your emails!
Love,
Lauma
